Laugardaginn 5. okt hélt undirritaður út í Krýsuvík, ásamt þeim Geir Alta Zoëga, Sigurjóni Svavarssyni, James Begley og strákunum hans Geirs. Planið var að halda áfram með kortlagningu Bálkahellis og kanna opin sem við James fundum seinustu helgi.
Veðrið var heldur drungalegt við Krýsuvíkina, þoka og þéttur úðu. Án teljandi vandræða fundum við Bálkahelli og skoðuðum hann allan. Undirritaður varð eftir í Bálkahelli og hélt áfram kortlagningarvinnu sem hófst seinustu helgi. Á meðan athuguðu strákarnir opin sem við James fundum seinustu helgi. Í stuttu máli þá eru aðeins einn eða tveir hellar af þeim sjö sem við fundum, þess virði að heimsækja aftur. Allir eru þeir þröngir og krefjast hnéhlífa og skriðs. Hér er lýsing James á hellunum:

Wide, muddy entrance with 3 low passages going off, all of which get too low after a few metres. Smaller entrance to the east leads to a small tube. Total length: 25m.
“Maze cave” GPS: N 63 50.645 W21 57.144
8 entrances in a small area linked by a maze of a passages, varying in size from very low to 1.25 metres high. Some of these passages are very wide. Some of the passages form interesting lava shapes, especially at the intersections between the passages. The passages are on at least 2 levels, although all the passages are close to the surface, and there are areas with lots of roots showing. The passages at the lower levels are smaller than the higher level passages. Not fully explored. Total length 100m+.

“Smooth cave” GPS: N63 50.902 W21 57.577
A line of collapses that follow the foot of a short slope marking the edge of a lava flow. It is possible to follow the tube between 2 of these entrances for 25 metres, in a low tube with a very smooth floor. Of the other entrances, the northernmost one is the largest, but only leads to 15 metres of low passageway. None of the other collapses leads to significant passage. Total length 50 metres.

Til að toppa daginn endanlega ákváðum við að hefja kortlagningu á Sængurkonuhelli, austan við Krýsuvík (sjá GPS-punkt). Við náðum að kortleggja svona helming af hellinum. Hraunið neðan við Sængurkonuhelli er mjög hella vænlegt og ættu hellaáhugamenn að gera sér ferð á þetta svæði í freista þess að finna fleiri hella.
